We've answered some common questions about this course:
What is MBSR?
Mindfulness-Based Stress reduction is the curriculum developed by Jon Kabat-Zinn at the University of Massachusetts Medical School in 1979. It uses a combination of mindfulness meditation, body awareness, mindful movement, and an exploration of patterns of behavior, thinking, and feeling. The program is designed to help participants recognize how stress affects their lives and teach them effective ways to access the body's innate capacity for well-being.
Who will benefit from MBSR?
Mindfulness-based approaches have been beneficial for those experiencing anxiety, sleep disorders, eating disorders, chronic pain, resistance to change, addiction recovery, depression, as well as those who would simply like to access inner resources for healthier relationships and resilience around everyday stressors.
What does a class look like?
Classes are held online via Zoom and last 2 and 1/2 hours. They include formal mindfulness practices such as sitting, standing, and walking meditation, as well as mindful eating and mindful movement. Each week explores a specific theme with presentations, discussions, and activities related to mindfulness and stress resilience. There is opportunity for group dialogue and exploration of the topics and experiences of each class.
Is there anything expected of me beyond attending the 8 classes?
Yes, there are home practice assignments that requires about 45-60 minutes each day. We will offer guided meditations and specific instruction for home practice. There is an orientation on Saturday, May 15th, which is required for participation in this course, as well as an all-day class on Sunday, June 27th.
